I recently downloaded the brand-new app FLTR, produced by popular photographer Mark Singerman. He has a sizable Instagram following and is known for his fantastic photo edits. He recently developed an app that would give people the ability to edit their photos in similar ways to him.
I was curious and downloaded the app. Before doing so, I reviewed the in-app purchases and they seemed reasonable and I thought it wouldn't affect my editing-experience. I thought wrong. Upon entering the app, I discovered that I had access to barely any of the filters advertised. I could use only one filter (Soft), and a few other features.
Seeing this, I decided to purchase the Unicorn pack. While viewing the app, there were several features in different categories marked 'Unicorn', so I thought that the $1.99 purchases would unlock those as well. This was not the case. I only got the filter, which can do very limited things to your photos (showcased above).
As it turned out, you could only unlock that and the Rainbow filter (also $1.99), but everything else had to be purchased at a yearly price of $50 (about $4.17 per month)
Needless to say, I was quite peeved.
This is not to say the app is not high quality. I believe the app offers excellent-quality filters and features, and I will likely use it for a few projects in the future. However, I feel slightly as though I was scammed out of two dollars. While it may not seem like a lot of money to some readers, for me, as a broke high-school student, I assure you, it is.
If you have fifty dollars to blow on an app every year, then this app is for you. If not, many of my friends have recommended VSCO, and I believe I will be checking that app out fairly soon.
